AS PRIMARLY AIMED AT CHILDREN
Description:
Lucky Charms is packaged as a “whole grain first ingredient product”. “They’re Magically Delicious!’ and “More WHOLE GRAIN than any other ingredient!*” *As compared to any other single ingredient. These words are misleading because marshmallows are the second largest ingredient and the marshmallow contains sugar, modified corn starch, corn syrup, dextrose and gelatin. Sugar is not the only ‘sugar’ in the box. They are trying to make it seem that the cereal is whole grain and nothing more. The lucky charm box has cartoon like characters. The box is hip and cool for kids that do not know better about a healthy diet. The “whole grain first ingredient” is promoted all over the box. The daily whole grain recommendation is on the side of the box. The USDA recommends 48 grams of whole grains daily. 11 grams of whole grain are in each serving of ¾ cup. The box indirectly justifies that four servings of lucky charms will satisfy your diet ‘requirements’. Four servings of lucky charms has 80 grams of sugar....

The packaging and promotion exaggerates how healthy lucky charms are for you. The box does not state anything about sugar other than on the back with the nutritional facts. Modified corn starch, corn syrup and dextrose are really bad for you and are separately labeled from the “sugar” ingredients as “other carbohydrate”.
