Leanwashing Index Advisory Panel

 

Many thanks to our panel of advisers representing food marketing, medicine, public health advocacy, and academia. Their input was invaluable in developing the Leanwashing Index Scoring Criteria.

Bruce Bradley, author, worked for over 15 years as a food marketer at companies including Nabisco, Pillsbury, and General Mills. In 2008, Bruce left the corporate world and started his consulting business. After learning more about the potential risks and environmental impact of eating processed foods, Bruce has become a huge fan of the organic food and eat local movements. To help spread the word about the benefits of eating real food, Bruce shares his food industry insights at his blog, www.brucebradley.com.


Harold Goldstein, PhD, is the executive director of the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, which he founded in 1999. CCPHA is a nationally recognized leader in advocating for public policies to address the social, economic, and community conditions that perpetuate the obesity epidemic. CCPHA has led statewide campaigns resulting in enactment of state laws eliminating soda and junk food from schools, getting first-ever funding for school physical education, and establishing the nation’s first state menu labeling law. Harold has a bachelor’s degree in physiology from UC Berkeley and both master’s and doctorate degrees in public health from UCLA.


Gretchen NurseGretchen Nurse, PhD, is an assistant professor at the University of Arizona Norton School of Family & Consumer Sciences. Her current research agenda supports the Retail and Consumer Science division’s Consumer, Environment and Sustainability Initiative, in which she primarily examines food-related issues. Nurse’s areas of research are based in environmental psychology and cover such topics as sustainable consumer behavior, decision-making, sustainable agriculture, and attitudes and values related to natural resources. Past research projects have included investigating consumer motivations to purchase locally grown produce.


Stephen Pont, MD, MPH, FAAP, is a pediatrician, assistant professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, Austin Programs, and has an adjunct appointment with the UT–Austin Department of Advertising. Stephen is the co-founder and medical director of the Texas Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Obesity, Dell Children’s Medical Center’s tertiary care pediatric weight management center. Nationally, Stephen serves as chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Provisional Section on Obesity and serves on the Children’s Hospital Association’s pediatric obesity treatment committee. Stephen is also a co-investigator on the recently funded Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Childhood Obesity Research Demonstration grant that will link multiple sectors including schools, health care, YMCAs, and community resources for maximum impact addressing childhood obesity.

Leanwashing Index Founders

Kevin Tuerff & Valerie DavisValerie Davis and Kevin Tuerff lead the charge for ethical green marketing and now are setting their sites on authentic food marketing by creating the Leanwashing Index. The duo has sounded a warning to greenwashers on NBC’s Today Show, in Brandweek, USA Today and U.S. News & World Report. Davis and Tuerff founded EnviroMedia Social Marketing, the first U.S. marketing firm to focus solely on the environment and public health. They speak frequently about authentic green and health marketing at national forums like Dwell on Design, Society for Nutrition Education, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, and the American Apparel and Footwear Association.
